How can you use it to your best advantage?
Platinum Rule Diversity Consulting can help your organisation move from diversity to integration, by improving mutual understanding and acceptance of differences among your staff. We can help your organisation to harness the creativity that divergent points of view bring, while decreasing actual or potential friction and conflict.
What can we do for you?
1) Professional development workshops on making the most of diversity
2) Onsite assessment and needs analysis using the IDI
3) Custom-tailored training program designed to deal specifically with your unique situation
At Platinum Rule Diversity Consulting we define a culture as a worldview or set of values held by an individual or group. In that context, cross-cultural misunderstandings could be the result of generational differences, gender differences, sexual orientation, and linguistic differences, as well as ethnic differences.
In the Lower Mainland, only Platinum Rule Diversity Consulting bases its approach on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Understanding (DMIS) and uses the IDI as a diagnostic and training tool.
The DMIS teaches how to move from the Golden Rule to the Platinum Rule.
Cross-cultural misunderstandings usually are not the result of intentional prejudice or discriminatory actions.
People with the best intentions can cause cross-cultural friction simply by working from the Golden Rule (treating others as they themselves want to be treated) while failing to understand the Platinum Rule - understanding
how other people want to be treated.
Platinum Rule Diversity Consulting can help you to unleash the power of your organisation's diversity through IDI Guided Cultural Competence Training.
- By increasing cultural competence and comfort with diversity in general, and addressing your unique needs and concerns in particular
- By reducing the cycle time for reducing conflict and increasing understanding
- By improving communication
- By promoting greater patience and support
- By enhancing your staff's capacity for self-reflection about experience with diversity and difference
- By increasing supervisory effectiveness
Platinum Rule Diversity Consulting uses the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) as a framework to help you understand orientations to difference. Then we employ the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), a reliable and valid psychometric questionnaire, to objectively measure individual and group orientations to cultural difference within your organisation. Based on this developmental framework, a training package can be custom tailored to give your organisation the tools it needs to develop the ability to communicate and work better with people of different backgrounds - to move from diversity to integration.
What is the IDI?
The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a statistically reliable tool for assessing cultural competence developed by Dr Mitchell Hammer and Dr. Milton J. Bennett in 1998. It is based on the DMIS - the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (Milton J. Bennett, 1986, 1993). The DMIS lays out the six developmental stages towards intercultural competence, each one increasing in complexity and sophistication.
The IDI is a 50-item, user-friendly, online questionnaire that produces both a graphic profile of either a group or individuals and a text-based interpretation of the prevailing orientation towards cultural differences.
IDI results are contextualised and operationalised through individual interviews and counseling, leading to an action plan for building cultural competence.
How can IDI results be used?
- To assess organisational or individual needs
- To provide feedback to individuals regarding their approach to intercultural relations
- To create lesson plans for group learning and action plans for individual learning
- To establish a solid foundation for coaching to improve cultural competence
- To evaluate the effectiveness of various training, counseling, and educational programs
